What if Kids Don't Need More Structure?

Hi Reader!

Do you ever wonder if you have “enough” structure in your home with your kids?
Do people tell you the solution to everything is “more structure?”

It’s interesting how quickly structure can fall to the side when you travel.

Right now, I’m in France, and we’ve been sleeping in. The original plan was to wander to markets in the morning, do a little sightseeing, and relax in the evenings.

Except… different markets happen on different days in different nearby towns, and on the first day, we couldn’t even find the one that was supposed to be in our little village of Couze-et-Saint-Front.

So instead? Intermarché.

Fresh bread, eggs, fruit, a lawn chair, and sunglasses for tomorrow’s château trip. Yep, found a supermarket.

Flexibility wins again.

Back in the Creating Confidence Daily app, I’ve spent the month of May talking about structure from an unschooling perspective, and this feels like the perfect real-life example of what happens when plans don’t work out.

Because this happens at home with our kids too.

Which got me thinking again about the phrase people love to throw around:
“Kids need structure.”

But what if the structure kids actually need has less to do with rigid schedules… and more to do with feeling supported by the people around them?

I wrote more about:

  • why imposed structure isn’t always the answer,
  • how to notice the rhythms your family already has,
  • and the kind of structure that may matter most.

I'll even add a few photos from the trip!
